Camping Altenburschla

Camping Altenburschla is a small campsite in the beautiful Werra Valley. As the campsite is situated in a valley, you can enjoy cycling along the many flat cycle paths or head for the hills. It is the ideal base from which to explore the region on foot, by bike or by canoe. We are surrounded by beautiful walking and cycling trails in Hesse and Thuringia.

Authentic camping in the great outdoors

We’re a campsite for genuine campers, so you won’t find any of those notorious German ‘permanent campers’ here – in other words, no long-term residents with miniature plants in fenced-off little gardens. There are pitches right by the river with large trees providing shade, but there are also plenty of pitches for sun-worshippers. The nights here are still truly dark, so you can gaze at the stars. During the day, you’ll hear and see many different birds – large birds such as birds of prey and swans, but also the tiny blue-and-red kingfisher. At dusk, you might spot a roe deer drinking on the other side of the river or a beaver swimming past.

The campsite stands out for its cosy atmosphere – there are no fenced-off pitches or rules about how to set up your campervan or tent.

Discover the history of the surrounding villages and towns

Enjoy a stroll through the picturesque half-timbered village of Altenburschla, which has been voted the most beautiful village in Hesse on several occasions. The surrounding villages and towns are also well worth a visit. For instance, the Brothers Grimm drew inspiration here for their stories and fairy tales; Martin Luther translated the Bible at Wartburg Castle near Eisenach, thereby laying the foundations for the modern German language; and at the Border Museum in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, you can still walk along a kilometre of the Iron Curtain and hear the ‘little’ stories of people who lived along the former border. Prince William of Orange left his mark on the city of Fulda, and of course there is plenty of art and culture in Kassel, the home of ‘Documenta’.
