Hoopmanna’s Pleats
Hoopmanna’s Pleats is a small-scale, authentic minicamping site nestled in a lush fruit orchard along the Elfstedenvaart, located between Harlingen and Leeuwarden in Friesland. Guests are warmly welcomed to pitch a tent or park a small campervan anywhere within the garden. There are four spacious pitches adjacent to the fruit trees. In the morning, you’ll be greeted by free-roaming chickens; in the evening, enjoy expansive views of lambs, cows, and horses grazing nearby. Self-reliance is central—visitors choose their own spot and largely take care of themselves. Pets and caravans are not permitted. The campsite is situated on an active farm, still within the municipal boundaries of Fryslân, yet far from urban bustle. The Elfstedenvaart runs alongside the site, offering natural spots to cool off in warm weather.
Rustic camping in Friesland
Drinking water is available on site, as well as a shared fridge. The toilet is located in the farm’s barn about 150 metres away. Please bring your own toilet paper. Cold water is available for washing up and warm water can be taken from the shower. A hot shower is available on request for a small fee. Electricity can also be arranged in advance. Several picnic tables are available and, on calm evenings, you can use the fire bowl. Firewood is sold for a small fee. Children can enjoy the trampoline and natural play features like a rope over the canal and a rope in the tree. Occasionally, a hammock is hung up for relaxing. A covered area at the picnic tables offers shelter when it rains.

The area around Hoopmanna’s Pleats is ideal for walks and bike rides through the colorful Frisian countryside and along the Elfstedenvaart. If you cycle towards Harlingen, you’ll pass windmills, historic towns, and quiet waterside spots. Franeker, about 20 minutes away, is perfect for shopping, visiting the Planetarium, or enjoying local markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The campsite is also conveniently located for day trips to the Wadden Islands, making it a perfect stop the night before your ferry journey. Peace, self-sufficiency, and nature close to Frisian culture and villages.
