Nature Camping in Ratum
This rural campsite is set on a small private estate near the German border, hidden in the countryside between Winterswijk and Vreden. The pitches are simple yet spacious and green—ideal for tents, small caravans or campers up to seven metres long. You literally camp with your feet in the grass, on unmarked spots, surrounded by farmland. On-site, you’ll find an outdoor shower at the forest edge, a compost toilet, and a barn equipped with a dishwashing station, kettle, coffee maker, fridge, and a two-burner gas stove. You can cook under the shelter, use the barbecue or the fire pit in the yard. If you’re travelling with a horse, grazing and stable space may be arranged. In case of rain, there’s a covered seating area in the barn with books, mood lighting and games.

The campsite is just eight kilometres from Winterswijk, where you can enjoy cultural attractions like the Villa Mondriaan Museum, local markets and cafés. Also nearby is the famous “Steengroeve” quarry—great for walking or fossil hunting. From the campsite you can easily walk or cycle across the border into Germany’s Vreden or explore more of the distinctive Achterhoek countryside. The region is renowned for its varied routes: lanes lined with trees, hedgerows, and traditional farmyards. Horse riding is also popular here, with several riding trails in the area.
